ABOUT THE CITY...
Founded in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia, and although it is not the oldest city in Colombia, Cartagena was one of the most important during the Spanish colony. It is considered one of the most important ports of the Spanish empire, which, after several attacks by pirates and privateers in the 17th century, decided to surround the entire city with a wall and protect it thanks to the Fort San Felipe and two more located on the bay entrance. In 1984, the city was declared UNESCO World Heritage. From that moment on, the city began to recover its historical center, maintaining the same colonial architecture, gates and balconies.
As one of the tourist capitals of Colombia, the cuisine variety of Cartagena is incredible. You can find restaurants of all kinds of national and international food.
If you visit Cartagena, you can not miss trying the Posta Cartagenera, the fried carimañola, the boyo cassava, the mote de queso (soup made with yams and cheese) and the typical seafood dishes you can find in the city.
As far as prices are concerned, you can find dishes from $ 9,000 COP on (5 USD or so) in small restaurants. If you want to try Cartagena’s real food, in the neighborhood of Getsemaní there is one of the most typical restaurants of the city: "Donde Socorro". We also recommend "Donde Olano," where you'll find a blend of Caribbean and French food.
places of interest
Our apartment has the best location in Cartagena, as it is within the walled city, which can walk by yourself, discovering more than 7 squares only within this part of the city. If you want to know a little more about the history of Cartagena, do not forget to stop by the Museum of the Inquisition and the Naval Museum. To the north and south of the city you can find beaches where you can sunbathe and have a good time. Nevertheless, the best beaches in Cartagena are in the Rosario Islands and you can find shipping services from the dock of the Pegasos leaving every day to go visit them.
Inside the walled city, it is not necessary to pay for transportation as you can visit it by foot or bike. Cartagena does not have a mass transit system, but many taxis are available; we suggest you ask the driver what his fare is before boarding. Remember that the minimum fare is about $ 5000 to $ 6000 COP.
